Hi Folks,
Now, this is a real puzzle...
One thing is certain, this is neither a Greek, nor Bulgarian nor Serbian locomotive...
Based on the locomotive face ('fatsa' in plain old greek) which is distinctly Borsig, and the Turkish pre-TCDD number board, I believe I can trace it to the old Turkish Bagdad Railway.
This would mean that the picture was shot during the Asia Minor campaign at an unknown locality, presumably along the Bagdad Railway, which was essentially german-built (hence the completely out-of-context building!).
I must confess I have been unable to trace the number '142'... however, if my assumption is true, the Bagdad railway had an important number of these Mogul (2-6-0 or 1'C) engines, and many of them survived in TCDD times. Now, the TCDD were known for frequently renumbering their locomotives, and this road number may represent an intermediate or transitional assignment; maybe another member of the forum more familiar with the TCDD roster can help us shed more light on the issue.
