Photo Balkanmodels: March 2002 at the Engine Shed Thessaloniki. Loco A504 just returned from the States. Note the original flat radiator grilles with different strutting behind. I think they were replaced after about a year. We did not model this version. Note also Jason's heating van in the back.

Happy Birthday Forum and from me.
The ten A501 class were delivered from MLW in Canada in 1975. They were intended to work singly on the heaviest freights to reduce double heading as well as operate some passenger services and were the first OSE locomotives to have electric train heat, operating on the UIC single wire system, with an AEG generator being attached to the main alternator frame for this purpose. However, initial tests showed that the UIC train heat system was not compatible with the Italian designed signalling system installed on the main line from Athens - Thessaloniki so it has remained unused on the entire class. With no train heating boiler, the A501's were less common on passenger trains, although by no means rare. During summers in the 1990's they could be found mixed indiscriminately with A451's on the Thessaloniki - Alexandroupouli section and Kozani/Idomeni section. A501 passenger operations on the Athens - Thessaloniki mainline were quite rare. This lack of boiler also meant that it's traditional location - the short hood - could be lower than that on the other OSE hood types, affording the train crew a better view ahead.
All surviving members of the class are based at Thessaloniki (A502 & A505 are stored at Aghios Ioannis as uneconomic to repair after derailment and collision damage) from where they operate heavy freight services to almost the entire extremities of the OSE standard gauge system, including Elefsis and Piraeus docks. In season, they can also be found working sugar beet trains in the Aminteo/Skydra/Kozani area. The most common turns for A501's are the Athens/Thessaloniki overnight mixed freights (one each way) and the Thessaloniki - Alexandroupouli overnight freights.
In 2002 began the reconstruction Α 501 - Α 510
