I have found this strange "diesel" with rubber wheels!!! It's obviously shot at Agios Ioannis. Does anybody has some idea what is it?
It comes from an ebay auction, it was displayed with the title "GREECE PIRAEUS RAIL YARD TRAIN RAILWAY RAILROAD HAULER LOCOMOTIVE ORIG PHOTO"

First time i see it in a photo ....

It was a possibly American switching diesel loco ( ''μηχανή ελιγμών'' ) characteristically refered to as '' with rubber wheels '' («μετά ελαστικών επισώτρων») and also refered to with (i think) a 5-digit number (i will look it up later), but that's very possible to be the Works number.

EDIT: Note the ''Plywoods'' in the roundhouse ;) ;)

It looks like a petrol loco with an American GE cab. It also has a bell on the top of the hood. But what is it between the double axle tyres. Is it the remnants of cylinders? Is it a Greek make do invention?

Christo,

Seems to be the typical 'rail dollies' for mixed opperation road/rail vehicle use

Hi folks,

This engine looks far more like a British shunter to me; this view is further supported by the typically British-gauged goods vans in the background.

To my knowledge, there are no records of British rolling stock, other than the Austerities, in Greece after WWII, but as we all know, sometimes records and archives can be incomplete, and we have seen in the past surprising appearances in Greece...

The Bettendorf bogie, as well as the S-160 tender partially visible in the background allows to date the pic to post-1947.

Has anybody tried to photoshop or GIMP the picture in order to read the inscriptions on the vans?

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Joseph,
I have forgotten to update this post. Frankie Elliott has recently posted at Amnizia all the data concerning this loco. http://www.amnizia.org/forum/viewtopic. ... start=1455
It seems to be an x-USATC, EVANS type shunter initially numbered as A.51, later renumbered to A.3

all photos from Fr. Elliott's archive
