My last pilgrimage:

Photo Balkanmodels: April 2001 loco Ζα306 at the Engine Shed Thessaloniki. Interesting refuge from the sun by the front buffers. Before you ask, I have to say that I did not pose those props in the foreground.

Hi everyone,

Another goodie I found while browsing the old negatives chest. It's the Za tender as it appeared at the MAI in 1978

Actually, it was allocated to the "ΣΥΝΕΡΓΕΙΟΝ ΧΗΜΙΚΗΣ ΕΚΧΟΡΤΩΣΕΩΣ ΓΡΑΜΜΗΣ" i.e. Chemical Weed Control Crew...
Try to guess now what the chemical product might have been, back in the late 70s...

Hi everyone,

Time to rekindle the fires...

While browsing the web, I stumbled today on this site
http://roland.arzul.pagesperso-orange.f ... istice.htm

The page is about the WWI repairs to France, and in includes a wonderful pic of the left side of Baden IV. From the modeller's perspective, the machine is very similar (almost identical) to the Za, and, bearing in mind that there is no living memory of the Za working in Greece, we can be allowed to take a few liberties in order to scratchbuild a credible model!!!

Has anybody tried to scratchbuild a Za? Plse post...

Hi All, and a Happy Easter to All friends celebrating it today!

I'll try to rekindle the fires on the good old Za issue...

We have all been conditioned to think that our good old Za306 is the only example remaining in the world, of a DeGlehn compound, similar to the Badische IV. Actually, there is a magnificent example of a very similar locomotive, no 1314 of the PO Midi, perfectly restored and proudly displayed at the Mulhouse Railway museum. I am not trying to promote that museum, but I visited it some time ago, and I can assure that it is worth the trip!!

So, 1314 is, just like the Za, based on the Badische IV and was built by SACM Grafenstaden.
The museum curators state that the locomotive never had boiler bands, but the rest is fairly accurate because upon withdrawal, the machine has been very carefully preserved.

We can only dream that our Za306 might one day look like the 1314!!

I've been scanning some old slides, and found this:

If only we had had the forum back then! :)
