Train Supplied Industries in Greece - Sugar Industry

Train and Industry relation is a subject that I am sure we all are very interested in. I know it's vast, so we better divide it in subtopics and start sharing some knowledge ;)

some things about the Sugar beets
(copied from the net  )

The sugarbeet as we know it today is derived from many years of breeding the domesticated beet (Beta vulgaris L.). It is said to get its name from the Greek letter beta because the swollen, turnip-like root resembles a Greek B. However, the oldest known beet type, chard, was domesticated by at least 2000 B.C, and was grown by both the Greeks and Romans. Chard was originally used medicinally and for its dense foliage growth as a pot herb much like spinach or some of the Chinese leaf vegetables are used today.

The swollen, fleshy taproot familiar today was not known until the second and third century, A.D. Beetroot, both red and white, were developed in Italy (thus known as the “Roman beet”) by selection from the wild beets native to the seacoasts of the Mediterranean. It was also found throughout Europe and hybridized with leaf beet types (chard) to produce the vast range of color and shape found in table beets today. It was used as a vegetable and was boiled in stews, baked in tarts, and roasted whole. White beets appear to have been more common, but less desirable than the red.

As you can get, sugar beet cultivation is more than traditional down here. Although it suffers from the general problems that Greek Agriculture faces the last decades, farmers of Northern Greece still try to make their living through it.

but this is another story, to go back to what interests us more, a nice video from basilis1967

The ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΒΙΟΜΗΧΑΝΙΑ ΖΑΧΑΡΗΣ (HELLENIC SUGAR INDUSTRY) has been funded in 1960 at Thessaloniki.
In 1961 the 1st factory started the production at Larissa. The 2nd one was added in 1962 at Plati and the 3rd in 1963 at Serres. A 4th one was built in 1972 at Xanthi, followed by the 5th in 1973 at Orestias.
Today there are three of these production units in use, at Plati, Serres and Orestias.

thanks Dimitri, but the comments and compliments are for the photographer :D
Stefanos not only shoots great photos as you can see, but also does it at some of the most beautiful and interesting locations a train fan could think!

I hope all together we'll manage to figure out how all that ''works''. At which stations the harvest is gathered, what lines are used and other such info.
For example, I don't know if Serres and Orestias plants are served by train like Plati (?).

To start about the the procedure, sugar beet harvesting starts in August and lasts for about 2 months.

thanks Jason, my questions are partially answered
Orestiada does have a connection, but is it in use?
Serres production unit is served by train?

and a new one
were those Z6 used at some point, or is there any record if the product (sugar) is/was transported by train to the packing units?

today only the packing unit of Larissa is operational, the other one at Xanthi has been closed recently :(
