OSE scrap wagon policies

One thing does puzzle me - why are all these derelict railway vehicles left dumped around the country? In most other European countries they'd have been cut up long ago. I'd have thought that OSE management might have considered scrapping them all to make some money - is it just that they haven't thought of it yet or is there no significant scrap metal market in Greece?

And before you all scream at me for even suggesting scrapping, which would be a terrible thing, I'm just curious to know.

As far as I know OSE has offered this material for scraping, asking a fixed price, but it seems to be no interest (?).
About the scrap market, they are most organized! Probably they don't need to pay much for them when they can have it almost for free....
Gangs of looters steal whatever they can. They even managed to scrap six (if I remember well) Α-9401 - 9420 series diesels from the Peloponese line!

That's unbelievable! No wonder OSE can't sell anything. Still, if the illegals are just picking away here and there, we'll still have lots to look at for a while and with luck Jason will get there with his camera before things disappear!

Right. No LEGAL interest, as soon as imigrants and gypsies steal piece by piece the wagons illegaly and most times they don't catch them. Of course there are ''stealing centres'' where they go even every day and steal parts such as places around Thessaloniki (Lachanokipi, Nea Magnisia e.t.c where this HUGE amount of useless wagons also hides them. FORTUNTAELY in 2011 or 2012 they cough the main scrapper whose team was using blowtorches and had scrapped part by part a whole T6 wagon - well, they left 2,5 axles and the one side of the chasis ), Kardiakafti (as Panagiotis said, in 2011 they stole 6 Mitsubishi engines and 12 more wagons, 18 vehicles in total and they have also cut sides of wagons and other things) and more.

Last legal scrapping wave was i think on 2007 or 2008. Since then train scrapping became legaly impossible due to some horrible scrapping scandals and the process started again with the Kardiakafti scrapping, 2011. Since then only the metre gauge vehicles are for sale - scrap but no one is interested .

The tanks in my post (at least most of them) were burned in 2007 (i think) and are a bit more to the right as we see your photo. But i dont know, maybe there are some of yours too...
