SYRTIS OF ACHLADOKAMPOS 1947-1974

Syrtis is a place near Achladokampos bridge. After the first bridge was destroyed by German forces in 6/9/1944, the line between Korinthos and Kalamata was cut.So, Greek engineers decided to do something very interesting. They built a line that went into gorge and back again.Although this line was built very quickly to be used until the new bridge was built, it remained in service until 1973-1974.What is more,Syrtis had no triangle or turntable plate. The loco went forward until the end of the line, where it went to the other side of the train and hauled it backwards towards either Tripolis or Korinthos. After the new bridge was built (the only one to be built and designed by GREEKS),Syrtis continued service as a train junkyard. In 1977,the first abandoned locos entered Syrtis. These locos are today in Kyparrisia,Kalamata depot and park,Crete,Tripolis and of course Myloi depot. When the locos left Syrtis, only wagons,De Dietrich and Linke Hofmann trailers and railcars were there, heavily damaged or burnt. In 1997, three Esslingen DMUs were also left in Syrtis and were scrapped in about 2002 together with everything else. The last rolling stock to be left in Syrtis were parts of or whole GMNs and GMPs and some passenger carriages. Moreover, the only one semi-rebuilt Esslingen was also moved there from Kalamaki in 2008.Everything,except one powered Ganz Mavag unit without engine and one Ganz Mavag trailer without an axle was scrapped in the end of 2014.

This is Syrtis. If you look carefully, you can recognise parts of scrapped trains and the Ganz,(the InterSyrtis express)
